new BMW K1200S

This Israeli site has photos of the new BMW K1200S, which has close to 160HP and a new Hossack-type front suspension system which is different from Telelever. It’ll be interesting to see if the Hossack-design ends up being more popular than Telelever.

This BMW site also has pictures of the K1200S. You know, the source:

When is BMW going to lead with performance instead of weird? The Hossack front-end is pretty cool, and might be really useful – but shaft drive is just heavy, and I don’t understand the point behind such a huge motor (1.2+ litres). The ‘Busa had a 1.3 – but that was years ago. The new ZX-10 has more power (180+) in a 998cc package.
I am not discounting the idea of various features being desirable in certain contexts – but if this is supposed to be a sportbike, which it is, then it should innovate in the direction of performance rather than being different just for the sake of being different. In terms of engineering, they have proven with this motorcycle to be the inferior of both Ducati and Honda, which feature innovative features that actually advance the state of play (new Kwaks, Yamahas and Suzukis are derivative rather than innovative – Duc has the desmo valve feature, which is cool as hell, and Honda has that awesome rear suspension).
My opinion is that suspension that works in two planes rather than one is the next advance, and if you can solve that then you’re really moved the ball forward (bikes need to be suspended when lying on their side – a flexy chassis is an interesting idea (Honda, et. al.) but there’s probably a better solution.

THE ZX10 HAS 148 REAR WHEEL HP WHEN PERFORMED ON A CREDIBLE REAR WHEEL DYNO ( CHECK MOTORCYCLE CONSUMER NEWS FOR VERIFICATION). THE 180 HP IS AN ESTIMATED FIGURE BASED ON THE RAM AIR EFFECT AND IT IS TAKEN AT THE CRANK.
HAPPY RIDING,
JOE.
